We are honored to be displaying a collection of beautiful and informative collage works from the community-minded folks at Athens Free School. With their playful cut-and-paste aesthetic, these eye-catching posters capture the DIY spirit of the Free School movement, which began in the 1960's and has experienced a hearty resurgence here in Athens.

Each collage doubles as an advertisement for a different locally-hosted educational event that is completely free to attend.

The Artist Shop had an incredible turn out in July for Athens Free School's screen-printing crash course, and we are excited to invite them back for two more events on October 19th: Hand-Sewn Patch Making from 5-5:45pm, then a DIY Cleaning Supply making class from 6-7pm. We hope to see you there!

René Shoemaker

René Shoemaker is a master silk painter, born in New York City, who maintains studios in Athens, GA, USA and Aubusson, France. Spanning four decades and embracing a variety of mediums, her artwork highlights a sense of place while capturing the ways spaces work together and how people inhabit and interact with those spaces.

René has exhibited in museums in Georgia, Mississippi, and Paris and in galleries and public spaces in Georgia, New York, the UK, and France. She teaches and speaks on silk painting, and in 2020 she received a Fiber Forward Focus Fellowship from AIR Serenbe in Georgia.
