Hardcover Pamphlet Binding - Bookmaking Workshop

Saturday, February 22nd (10:00am-12:00pm) & Sunday, February 23rd (10:00am-12:00pm)

In this two day workshop, students will learn the simple skills needed to create intimately scaled hardcover pamphlet stitched books. The pamphlet stitch allows the artist to bind one or two signatures together securely, so that they might be encased in a hardcover of the artist's construction and design. The result is an elegant book structure that has relatively few pages but a strong presence. Perfect for poetry chapbooks, short travel journals, or pocket-sized sketchbooks.

In this class, we will create two books - one single signature hardcover pamphlet and one double-signature hardcover pamphlet. All supplies are included in the cost of the workshop.

Instructor: Brian Hitselberger

Brian Hitselberger (b. 1982) is an artist living and working in Athens, Georgia.

His installations, paintings, and works on paper explore a variety of themes that shift between subjects and perspectives alternately intimate and immense – occasionally within the same piece. Recent subjects include sleeping and dreaming, hate speech, drag queens as spiritual healers, and queer magic. Although working across a variety of media, Brian is a committed studio artist, and positions technique and material at the center of his studio practice.

His work has been exhibited throughout the Southeast and the Mid-Atlantic. He has held residencies at the Elsewhere Artists Collaborative, the HUB-BUB Arts Initiative, and the Hambidge Center for the Arts. He has received funding for his work from the Georgia Council for the Arts, the Willson Center for the Humanities, and the Andy Warhol Foundation. He received a BFA in Printmaking from Tulane University in 2005, and an MFA in Painting from the University of Georgia in 2010. He is currently an Associate Professor of Painting and Printmaking in the Art Department of Piedmont College and represented by {Poem88} in Atlanta.
