Hand painting on silk is an ancient art with a rich history from India, China, and Japan. We begin the process of silk painting with stretching silk on a frame, sketching or transferring your design onto the silk, mixing dye colors, and painting the dye on - a technique similar to using watercolor. This is exactly what we will do in the class together. Silk painting is a fabulous technique that makes the silk come alive with vibrant color as you apply the dye to the silk.
Each workshop participant will create (and take home) a painting on a 22” square hemmed silk that can be worn as a scarf or displayed as a wall hanging.
No experience necessary. All levels welcome, and all supplies will be provided. All you need to bring is the inspiration and a readiness to create beauty!
Interested, but not sure what to paint? René will share examples of historic and contemporary silk paintings during the workshop to help trigger your creativity.
