As a general rule, you should always varnish your work when possible. Varnishes are applied over dry paint films and have several purposes. The first and most important function is to protect the painting surface from the environment and protect the pigments from ultraviolet light. Secondly, varnishes can be used to change or unify a painting's surface sheen.

Winsor & Newton Professional Satin Varnish Spray

High-quality varnish for oil, alkyd, and acrylic paintings dries quickly to low-gloss sheen. Paintings must be thoroughly dry prior to application. 400ml Can.

Retouching Varnish

For retouching, used between subsequent layers of oil paint to bring back the original color of previously applied layers. For protecting a recently finished oil or acrylic painting, Retouching Gloss Varnish offers an ideal, non-yellowing temporary solution. Because most paintings take months to dry completely, Retouching Gloss Varnish can be applied on touch-dry paint, to allow the inner layers to dry completely while protecting the surface from dirt and impurities.

It dries in only a few hours and is available in a handy 14 oz. aerosol spray can.
