About the Artist

A self-taught artist born in Westchester, PA in 1978 and raised in the Appalachian mountains of Jefferson, NC, James Greer has lived in Athens, GA for almost 30 years. Known for his incredibly detailed ink drawings on paper, he uses fine lines and subtle stippling to reveal mysterious worlds that seem to exist just beyond our own.

In childhood, James became enamored with pen and ink artwork after seeing Victorian scientific illustrations and religious lithography in old books. In adolescence, an obsession with skateboard graphics shaped a dream of becoming a “serious artist.” In his early twenties, he was gifted a set of professional pens and a pad of archival paper, and he began drawing in earnest.

Greer's work has been exhibited in galleries throughout the southeast, as well as in numerous local establishments. He has been commissioned for storefront murals, album cover art, T-shirt designs, skateboard graphics, and various other projects. He is extremely grateful for the privilege and opportunity to share his work.

Artist Statement

For nearly 20 years, nearly all of the art that I created was figurative and/or narrative, stemming from a lifetime of vivid dreams and imaginative compulsions. In the past few years, my artistic focus has shifted away from storytelling towards examination of the hidden essence of Form, the mirthful deception of objective reality, the undeniable truth of mathematics, and the viscerally ceaseless micro/macro experience of the natural world. This curated set of drawings serves as an exploration of the unsolvable.
